What Is an Apicectomy?
An Apicectomy, also known as root-end surgery, is a minor surgical procedure performed when a tooth continues to have infection or inflammation after root canal treatment.
Rather than removing the entire tooth, an apicectomy removes the infected tip of the tooth root and surrounding diseased tissue, helping preserve your natural tooth whenever possible.
How Does an Apicectomy Work?
After administering local anaesthesia, your oral surgeon gently accesses the root tip through the gum, removes the infected tissue and the end of the root, and seals the root with a biocompatible filling material.
The gum is then carefully repositioned to promote healing while preserving the tooth.
If an infection remains after a root canal treatment, an apicectomy may help save the tooth. This minor surgical procedure removes the infected root tip and seals the tooth to prevent future infection.
